What Are Invisalign Aligners?

Invisalign aligners are a series of clear plastic trays that realign your teeth. These orthodontic trays use pinpointed pressure to gradually guide your teeth into their proper place. You'll typically wear each set of trays for two weeks before moving on to the next set, with each set moving your teeth a little further into alignment. These aligners are an increasingly popular choice for orthodontic treatment that is an effective alternative to traditional braces.

Bite Issues Clear Aligners Can Correct

Dr. Blair of Powell Dental works diligently to assess each case and meticulously plan your treatment for lasting and satisfying results. Our dentist can give you a timetable for the expected length of your treatment once the process is planned. Invisible aligners can be used to treat a variety of orthodontic issues, including:

  • Crowded Teeth: This issue is seen when teeth overlap in your mouth.
  • Crooked Teeth: Misaligned teeth that can impede bite.
  • Unwanted Gaps: Gaps in your teeth can affect your bite and cause food to get caught between them.
  • Overbite: When your upper teeth overlap your bottom teeth, it can cause jaw pain, difficulty chewing, sleep apnea, and other bite problems.
  • Underbites: This situation can affect your ability to eat and speak as well as increase the risk of gum disease, decay, TMD, and various other dental problems.

Our Invisalign Treatment Process

The first step in this process is a consultation with Dr. Blair to determine whether you're a good candidate for this treatment. We'll conduct a comprehensive exam to assess the situation and determine your eligibility for this care option. Then, our team takes impressions of your teeth to help plan how treatment will affect your smile, track the correction path, and determine how many trays you need for a completed course.

The length of your treatment time can vary based on your unique bite, so our dentist will go over the expectations for completing care. He then sends your dental impressions to a lab for tray creation. Once your trays are crafted and arrive at our office, we invite you back for your first fitting and walk you through how to wear and care for your aligners.

Clear Aligners FAQs

Beginning Invisalign treatment is a big commitment, and we understand you'll likely have questions about the process and what kind of results you can expect. Our team is happy to discuss all your questions and provide the information you need to feel confident in your decision. Some of the questions we often receive about invisible aligners include:

How many aligner trays will I need?

The number of trays will depend entirely upon your unique smile and the nature of your bite misalignment. After we take your digital impressions and begin planning your treatment, our dentist will give you an approximation of how many trays it will take to achieve your desired results.

One of the most appealing parts of clear braces is that they're removable, so you can eat or drink whatever you like during your treatment. You will need to brush your teeth and rinse your aligner trays whenever you consume food or drinks, but you can otherwise eat normally as long as you're meeting the minimum daily required time for wearing the aligners.

Cleaning your aligners is fairly straightforward. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a fragrance-free neutral soap or approved cleaner to gently brush all sides of each tray once a day. Avoid using hot water, which can warp the trays, or toothpaste, as this can leave small scratches in the plastic.

If you've lost or damaged a set of your aligners, call our office as soon as you can. We'll discuss where you are in your treatment and whether it would be best for you to move on to the next set or wear your previous set of trays while we have a replacement pair made for you.
